Payment processing is often an overlooked part of running a pharmacy. Most pharmacists receive a monthly statement, pay what’s due, and move on. While this process seems simple enough, too often, it translates to paying far more in credit card fees than you realize, often without a clear understanding of where those costs come from.Every time a patient pays with a credit or debit card, multiple systems and organizations are involved behind the scenes. Card networks, banks, processors, and software platforms all work together in a complex network behind the scenes. When those vendors are disjointed, disconnected, or poorly explained, you may find it hard to understand exactly what you’re paying for, and why.

Ask any independent pharmacist why they went into the industry—and more importantly, why they’ve stayed—and they’ll likely give you the same answer: the patients. For all the niche medication knowledge, clinical skills, and business savvy pharmacists bring to the table, one thing comes up again and again: the most rewarding part of the job is caring for the people in your community. Depending on your patient base, you might serve hundreds—if not thousands—of people every week. And with that volume, it’s not always easy to keep up, let alone maintain the personal connection that independent pharmacies are known for.

As more pharmacies expand into clinical care, they’re learning to juggle new opportunities with the same day-to-day tasks they’ve been used to handling for years.
