5 BestRx Features That Help Improve Patient Care

Posted on

This post is Part 2 of a 3-part series adapted from the BestRx Tips & Tricks session at the Connect 2025 Pharmacy Conference. In Part 1, we covered dispensing features. Here, in Part 2, we cover patient engagement tools, and in Part 3, we focus on claims, compliance, and team resources.

Ask any independent pharmacist why they went into the industry—and more importantly, why they’ve stayed—and they’ll likely give you the same answer: the patients.

For all the niche medication knowledge, clinical skills, and business savvy pharmacists bring to the table, one thing comes up again and again: the most rewarding part of the job is caring for the people in your community.

Depending on your patient base, you might serve hundreds—if not thousands—of people every week. And with that volume, it’s not always easy to keep up, let alone maintain the personal connection that independent pharmacies are known for.

But BestRx can help you strike the right balance. We create tools to stay in touch and stay ahead, without letting communication efforts eat up your entire day.

Here are some of our favorite features for keeping track of patients, reaching out in real time, and making sure nothing (and no one) slips through the cracks.

1. Quick Patient Search

When a patient walks in and you only remember part of their name, you need a way to find their profile fast (without revealing you’ve asked a dozen times before).

BestRx’s Quick Patient Search lets you pull up patient profiles instantly, even if you only have part of their name, phone number, or Rx number. Spend less time hunting and more time helping.

How to use it:

  • Use F6 or click the Patient icon in the top toolbar
  • Type the patient’s name, phone number, date of birth, or Rx number
  • The results filter automatically as you type

2. Patient Eligibility Check

Every pharmacy’s been there: a patient drops off a prescription, you process the claim, and it rejects because of an inactive insurance policy or updated coverage.

Now you’re stuck tracking down updated information—often with the patient waiting right in front of you.

Maybe they forgot their card. Maybe they didn’t even realize their coverage changed. Either way, you’re caught in the middle, and frustration builds fast.

Skip the surprises and stay ahead of the check with BestRx’s Patient Eligibility Check. You can check insurance coverage with just one click (ideally earlier in workflow), so you can catch those issues upfront and keep the line moving smoothly.

How to use it:

  • Open the Patient Profile (F6)
  • Click the Eligibility tab
  • Select the BIN/PCN from the dropdown
  • See verification status, coverage details, and eligibility dates instantly

3. Patient Rx Profile Column

Every pharmacy team works a little differently, and your software should reflect that.

BestRx lets you customize the Rx Profile columns within a patient’s chart, so you only see the info that matters to you. Hide what’s irrelevant, rearrange the order, and make the view your own.

How to use it:

  • Open the Patient Profile (F6)
  • Click the Gear Icon in the upper-right corner
  • Use the Settings Menu to customize which columns appear and how they’re arranged.

4. 2-Way Chat

Ever wish you could quickly check in with a patient without playing phone tag?

The 2-Way Chat feature lets you securely message patients through the Your Local Pharmacy patient app, making communication faster and easier for everyone involved.

How to use it:

  • Go to More > Patient Communications > 2-Way Chat
  • Select the patient
  • Type your message and send
  • Patients get your message in their Your Local Pharmacy app and can reply directly

5. Remarks: Patient vs. Rx

Sometimes you need to leave a quick note about a patient (or a prescription), but not everyone on the team needs to see everything.

BestRx’s Remarks feature lets you add notes either to the patient profile or to individual prescriptions, with control over who sees what.

How to use it:

  • To add a Patient Remark:
    • Open the Patient Profile > Go to the Remarks tab
    • Click Add > Select Patient
    • Leave your note and hit Save
  • To add an Rx-Specific Remark:
    • From the Fill screen, right-click the Rx > Add Remark
    • Choose the appropriate category (e.g. “Call Doctor Before Fill”)
    • Leave your note and hit Save

Conclusion

Patients are the reason you do what you do—and keeping those relationships strong takes more than clinical expertise. It takes the right communication tools.

Whether you need to answer a question, check in on a refill, or just make sure nothing slips through the cracks, BestRx gives you tools to stay organized and on top of patient relationships.
